From the beginning, nobody ever said owning a business was easy. This week exemplified that. It started out a bit rough, but eventually the sun does shine through, and that is why I am very happy to report that we still supplied three customers with new logos that they love; nearly completed two very complicated database & inventory management systems; set up a few new Facebook fan pages and launched a brand new website for a great organization! We are so proud to be part of the High River Block Parent organization, and enjoyed helping them with the design and creation of their new website and awesome business cards, which they gave out at the High River Trade Show. It’s helping organizations like this in our own community that shows Cohesion Media’s true value to our town, clients, staff and families. This is why we own our own business, and why we love what we do (more often than not). Have a great weekend everybody!

Changing the Focus

This week has been like so many others for small business owners, the many ups and downs of running your own business. We recently started work on a new logo for a client who contacted us last week who then informed us that she had heard some, let’s call it “Not so good” feedback about our business, however she still decided to give us the opportunity to brand her new business by creating a new logo, business cards and website. I am very pleased to report that she loves the work we are doing for her and she took the extra time to email us saying that she is very happy with our service.

The tricky thing about all this is we regularly hear great, positive feedback about how we are doing things, yet when there is something not so flattering being said the first instinct is to get mad, wonder who is saying unscrupulous things about our business or immediately try to defend ourselves. Its then, that I need to remember to take a step back and reflect on all the positive things and remember that you can’t please everybody, (although it is always my goal) especially when the customer doesn’t always know what they want or needs something done so quickly that time just will not allow “full customization” or what they “want” just won’t work and look good at the same time.

I think having something that looks good, far outweighs “wants” when it’s a matter of branding. In fact if it looks good, your customers will “want” what you have to offer.

I regularly hear people talking about Cohesion Media around town and the first thing that comes to mind is, “Uh Oh, what now?” I think that crosses the minds of other business owners all around the world, however I must say I am pleased to report that most everybody has positive things to say about our rapidly growing business.

This is why I have decided to start contributing to our blog, I want to keep our clients in the goings on with Cohesion Media and the communities we serve so here I go. I have so many things I want to touch on in this long past first entry however I will keep it short and to the point this week. Recently our project coordinator has successfully completed her Social Media marketing for business courses while achieving great marks she still managed to keep our clients happy and our designers and programmer busy. When I began my business eight months ago, I really thought I could build my own website by using the template program that came with my computer. I felt it was the only way I could control the information that was on the site. I already had a Facebook page…had created my own BlogSpot page…how hard could it be? I laboured through the learning curve that ensued.

Since then, not only have I come to realize the importance of having a website, more importantly, I have come to realize why mine is so inadequate. There is a very apropos saying “sell your strengths, buy your weaknesses”. One of the toughest lessons I have had to learn as a new business owner is that I cannot do everything and accept that the best use of my time is not spent trying to figure things out in areas where I haven’t any expertise.

I have learned that a website is much more than just having a ‘web presence’. My website lacks the kind of customization that I am seeing on other sites…e.g. the local funeral home is an impressive site. I absolutely love it!! It offers clear and easy navigation tools, options for signing up to newsletters, sales via the website and I have complete confidence in the company when I visit their site.

I would like people to visit my site repeatedly and look at pages other than just my ‘Home’ page. As I struggle to build my business, I question whether the advertising dollars I paid out in other forms of media actually paid off. Not only do I want to be able to attract more people to my business, I want to have the ability to measure the effectiveness of my website.

I have spoken to a lot of website designers lately, at Cohesion Media and through other local firms, and they seem pretty convinced that a professionally-designed website is fundamental to the success of any business in this day and age. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I win your contest!
